The wind power production varies according to the availability of wind throughout the year, and hence has to be supported by some other source of power in case of low power production. To counter this problem, grid synchronization is done, which is prone to technical glitches at the time of grid failures. Another major problem faced is the‘ flickering effect’ of induction generator being used for the purpose of power production. This occur
due to variation in wind speed thereby varying the output power due to ‘tower shadow effect’.
In this paper, we analyzed the voltage variations associated with an offshore wind farm connected to an existing power network along with the role of an SVC/STATCOM at the grid connection point in mitigating voltage problems.
MATLAB SIMULINK has been used for the simulation of different modules of wind farm connection scheme to the grid and for analyzing the effect on stability due to the connection of SVC/STATCOM at the grid connection point.
